Often, when a teen is overweight, it is because there is a problem with the nutritional value of their diet, or it may be psychological, familial or physiological, all of which we will discuss a little bit more, further on in this publication.

The Family

Often children and teens are more at risk of becoming overweight if they have two overweight parents. Although in some cases, this may be due to a powerful genetic factor, or it may be because they are modelling themselves after what they see their parents eating. Also physical activities, if any, they take part in, can indirectly affect the teen. Inactivity

On average, an American child will spend several hours each day watching television or on a computer. Compare this to years ago, when this time would have been spent doing some form of physical activity instead. There are a large amount of teens and children who are now overweight, as they are expending little energy, and often eat high calorie snacks while watching TV or playing on the computer. Today in the US, only about 1/3 of elementary school children carry out some form of physical education, and less than 1/5 take part in physical activity programs after school.

This is a frightening statistic!

Heredity

Recently, information has shown that heredity can influence weight gain in a child and teen. It was found that children born to overweight mothers have been found to be less active, and often gain more weight by the age of 3 months compared to those children born to mothers who are a normal weight, which suggests a possible inborn drive to conserve energy. It is a sad fact that, due to poor eating habits and lack of physical exercise, children born since the year 2000 are likely to have the sad distinction of being the first generation to die of natural causes before their parents.

If you can call diseases directly brought on by eating themselves to death from the cradle, "natural causes"!

It's up to all of us to do something about this woeful state of affairs.

Meeting Our Teenagers Halfway in Life

When raising teenagers, there will be more than enough reasons to fuss, fight and quarrel about the choices they make in every day life. One of those quarrels need not be about their bedroom décor. A teenager will want to create a section of the home, a retreat if you will, where they can go to relax and remove themselves from the hassles of having parents. Their bedrooms are their retreats and their bedding choice needs to be what makes them happy.

Cool bedding for a parent will never be the same type of bedding that is cool for a teenager. As the old adage states, you need to pick your battles, and a battle about bedding is one that need not be fought. Meeting our teens half way in life, means allowing them to have freedoms that we are not a part of. If a teenager so chooses a black cool bedding set with hot pink pillows and skulls, that is what will make them happy in life. And, while we may not love their design choices, it is this freedom of choice that molds who they are later in life.

Teenagers will try and test their parents at many points in life. Do not squabble over the simple things. Leave the stress for the times when the big choices need to be made and offer your teen a little freedom when choosing a bedding that is cool to them.
